🎒 Back-to-School Snack Attack
Back-to-school season means backpacks, schedules, homework, activities…and kids who walk through the door at 3:15 acting like they haven’t eaten in three days. 😂
Before we even get to dinner, there’s that magical stretch of the afternoon when everyone needs a little something to keep them going.
So this week, we’re talking about one of my favorite ways to make that transition from school to dinner a little easier.
Welcome to this week’s 3 Bites from Cathy’s Kitchen!
🧂 Cathy’s Pantry Pick
The After-School Snack Solution
I’m a big believer that an after-school snack doesn’t have to be complicated.
You just need a few things that are easy to grab, easy to eat, and actually give everyone enough fuel to make it to dinner.
Think:
🍎 Fruit + cheese
🥕 Veggies + dip (my go-to)
🍿 Flavored Popcorn + something with protein
🌯 A wrap or pinwheel
🥨 Crackers + hummus
🍪 A homemade treat (like this!) + a glass of milk
And here’s my favorite part: you can make it feel special without making it complicated.
A little dip. A fun serving board. A homemade snack.
Suddenly, “I’m starving!” becomes a little more manageable.

💡 Kitchen Hack of the Week
The 3:00 Snack Rule
Here’s my back-to-school sanity saver:
Have the snack ready BEFORE everyone gets hungry.
Try thinking of your afternoon snack as a little bridge between lunch and dinner.
I like the simple formula:
Protein + Produce + Fun
For example:
- Apple + cheese + crackers
- Yogurt + berries + granola
- Carrots + dip + pretzels
- Banana + peanut butter + toast
It doesn’t have to be Pinterest-worthy.
It just needs to keep the hungry humans happy until dinner. 😂
And bonus points if your kids can grab it themselves!

The End-of-Summer Fridge Reset
Sometimes a kitchen hack isn’t about what you’re cooking…
It’s about cleaning the fridge you’ve been avoiding. 😂
My husband and I finally tackled ours this weekend—and when I say we did a DEEP clean, I mean DEEP. DEEP. CLEAN.
It was one of those things we both knew needed to happen, but somehow kept finding other things to do instead.
Then we decided to make it fun.
We picked a rainy day, cranked up some late-’90s music, and went to work!
There was scrubbing.
There was organizing.
There may have been a couple of spontaneous dance-party breaks. 💃🕺

But mostly, there was a LOT of cleaning.
And let me tell you…
The after is SO satisfying.
Everything is clean. Everything has a place. I can actually see what we have in there again—and I’m pretty sure there are a few ingredients that just became dinner because of it!
So here’s my end-of-summer kitchen challenge:
Pick ONE kitchen project you’ve been putting off.
Clean the fridge.
Organize the pantry.
Clean out the freezer.
Tackle that one cabinet.
Put on a playlist you love, set a timer, and just DO IT.

And if you need a dance break?
Take the dance break. 😉
Sometimes the best kitchen reset has nothing to do with cooking.
And honestly…I’m very glad we finally did it. ❤️
